There is much to be said about the quintessential British town of Henley on Thames. Famous for the annual Rowing Regatta where countries from all over the world come to compete and residents enjoy a summer party. Henley has much to offer for dog lovers and walkers alike.

So here are our favourite 5 British walks in and around Henley on Thames, rated by us! Remember, if you build up an appetite from all your substantial walking, we offer a real hearty pub lunch and of course, we’re always dog friendly!

  1. The Station Stroll
    The Station, Henley on Thames
    Rating: 4 Stars

    For some pure escapism and an idyllic way to spend a sunny afternoon, The Station stroll is a delightful walk which forms a complete circle. The route takes you through the beautiful Culham Court Estate which with its deer park and stunning Jane Austen style gardens (best to keep dogs on leads here). For spectacular views of the Thames and the Chilterns, this walk is for you.

    Walk Duration: 3 hours
    Starting Point: Henley Station
    Terrain: A variety of steepness, best suited for those who have a glimpse of the hiking gene.
    Distance: 5.8 miles
    What’s There: Car parking, signposts, rest stops and a deer park.

  2. The Lock to Shiplake
    Henley on Thames
    Rating: 5 Stars

    Starting from the picturesque town of Henley on Thames, heading down the river to lower Shiplake. The path offers gentle walking for all abilities, with delightful views of the river winding its way through green meadows, well-kept parks and over the Henley lock. Great for dogs to roam free through long meadow fields and children to explore safely.

    Starting Point: Henley Station
    Terrain: Flat and mainly pathed – suitable for prams & wheelchairs
    Distance: 4 miles
    What’s There: Picnic areas, W/C (in park), river lock & cafes.

  3. Remenham & Round
    Henley on Thames
    Rating: 5 Stars

    This is a stroll offering much more than just the earth beneath your feet. Starting at The Little Angel, just over the bridge of the historical market town of Henley on Thames, the route winds down towards the river and double backs on itself. With the chance to spot wildlife such as Red Kites, Buzzards, Herons, Kingfishers and wild Deer, all along the riverside, there are also plenty of historical buildings along route. The route offers fantastic views of the Thames Valley and Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with wonderful countryside and quaint picturesque villages.

    Starting Point: The Little Angel, Remenham Lane
    Terrain: Flat and easy
    Distance: 5 miles
    What’s There: River Thames, quaint villages, wildlife spotting & off lead areas.

  4. Kite Views
    Henley on Thames & Rotherfield Greys
    Rating: 4 Stars

    A real locals favourite for dogs to run off lead as far as their heart’s content! With different levels of steepness, woodlands and long grass meadows during the summer months, the route is a fantastic walk for dogs and owners alike seeking something a little more challenging.

    Walking Duration: 2 Hours
    Starting Point: Henley College Car Park, The Greys
    Terrain: Intermediate, with ranging levels of steepness.
    Distance: 4 miles
    What’s There: Red kite spotting, car park, meadow fields and foot paths.

  5. Mapledurham Woods & Watermill
    Peppard Common
    Rating: 5 Stars

    A wonderful long walk through typical Chiltern beechwood and green meadows with the magnificent Elizabethan Mapledurham House, Church and Watermill, as a halfway stopping point. With a few sections prone to the nettles, it’s best to cover up to avoid any nasty stings!

    Walking Duration: 5 hours
    Starting Point: Peppard Common, RG9 5JA
    Terrain: Easy Walking
    Distance: 10 ½ mile
    What’s There: On route refreshments, fields and plenty of off lead areas.

If you decide you’ve had enough walking for one day and need a refreshing beverage or a jolly-good heart-warming meal, pop into The Little Angel where you’ll be welcomed by a warming fire and friendly faces. The Little Angel is a real favourite amongst Henley residents and located in the heart of the town, provides an excellent spot for some well-deserved lunch. The pub come restaurant offers a range of classic dishes, from homemade pie of the day, to a remake of the nation’s favourite dish, Ale-battered haddock with chunky chips. Oh, and don’t forget we’re experts in the Great British Institution that is the mighty Sunday Roast.
