World Malbec Wine Day: The Story Behind the Bottle

To celebrate World Malbec Wine Day, we dived deep into the history of where this splendid wine originates and selected a few of our personal favourites.

It all stems back to a mere 25 years ago, were the name ‘Malbec’ was virtually unknown. The Malbec grape’s home was in the South-West of France, but back then used to make a tough wine, Cahors, called Cot. There was some mention of Malbec over in Bordeaux, but it was still rather restricted, and not commonly known.

In the 1990’s, Argentina producers saw an opportunity to create something they knew people would love. With acres upon acres of Malbec grapes growing freely through the high-altitude fields of Argentina, a new style of wine was born. A full-bodied wine with mature red and brambly black fruits, complex chocolatey notes and a rich texture soon become an absolute sensation for wine lovers across the world.

Whilst it wasn’t easy choosing seven of our favourite Malbec wines, here are the ones that really made our taste buds tingle and left us wanting more. We’ve selected a range of award-winning Malbec’s, one from the South of France and the rest from Mendoza, Argentina.

Norton Finca La Colonia
Argentina – Mendoza
Vintage: 2019
Average Price: £8

Rating: 88/100

Sweet and spicy aromas, reminiscent of black pepper. Ripe red fruit on the palate, smooth texture and a harmonious finish.

Norton Privada Malbec
Argentina – Mendoza
Vintage: 2015
Average Price: £18

Rating: 91/100
Awarded 95 points, Tim Atkin MW

An award-winning wine with complex notes of ripe red fruit, cassis and hints of black pepper. The rich texture is supported by elegant, fine-grained tannins contributing to a plush, harmonious and lengthy finish.

Norton Altura Cabernet Franc
Argentina – Mendoza
Vintage: 2017
Average Price: £15

Rating: 89/100
Awarded Gold Medal, Sommelier Wine Awards

Having been awarded Gold Medal, from the Sommerlier Wine Awards, this Malbec is bright and intense marrying ripe yet fresh berry flavours with herbaceous and minty notes. A fresh acidity lifts the palate and notes of spice and adds a smoke complexity to the finish.

Badet-Clément Révélation
France – Languedoc
Vintage: 2016
Average Price: £10

Rating: 86/100

Redolent with bold red and black fruits with hints of liquorice and spice. There is a real richness to the palate and the fine tannins are soft and round, followed by a refreshing lick of acidity on the finish.

Bodega Norton 1895 D.O.C.
Argentina – Mendoza
Vintage: 2016
Average Price: £8

Rating: 85/100

One of the most popular wines from Mendoza, the generous plum-laden fruits and violent hints, is deep red in colour, fresh and well balanced, with notes of black pepper. Friendly tannins on the palate, rounded structure and long finish.

Finca Decero
Argentina – Mendoza
Vintage: 2017
Average Price: £14

Rating: 89/100

A medium-bodied, very well balanced wine with fresh acidity, it shows supple and elegant tannins that benefit from 14 months maturation in French oak barrels. The wine characterises intense violet aromas over a core of red fruits with notes of cherries and raspberries.

Masi Tupungato Passo Doble
Argentina – Mendoza
Vintage: 2016
Average Price: £9

Rating: 87/100

Fresh and spicy aromas beautifully paired with ripe red. With a long and dry finish, the unique “double fermentation process” combines Malbec grapes with dried Corvina grapes brings full aromas, good structure, and soft tannins.
